Valentine’s Day is coming up and the pressure to feel the love is on. It’s become common practice in our society to dote upon our significant others and family members during this time, but in doing so we often neglect ourselves. As I write this article I am currently battling yet another bout of the flu, and I’m here to tell you that a little self love is just what we all need.
Love spells and rituals can seem like fun, and they are probably the most searched spells right next to wealth spells. Let me tell you though, you’ll never be able to bewitch someone else if you cannot find some love within yourself. After all, the energy you put out, is the energy you will receive back. So allow me to present you with some simple self love magick you can do at home.
You’ve probable hear the expression “look good to feel good”, well it’s time to start applying it to your life. This Valentines Day do something special for yourself. That can be something as simple as a quick makeup application or you can go all out and dress to the 9’s. Not interested in getting dolled up? Take the time to give yourself a little pampering.
Rose Water Rose water has been my favorite tool in my beauty arsenal for a very long time. Using rose water as a toner boasts many benefits which will help keep your skin looking fresh and youthful. Because it’s a mild toner it is gentle on all skin types, but is great for those with acne because of its anti-inflammatory properties. It helps to hydrate the skin and can help to reduce redness as well as soothe irritation.
Rose water has been the beauty product of choice for centuries among commoners and royalty alike. The best part is that it’s easy to make and the soothing fragrance can help to reduce anxiety and invokes feelings of love and peace. If you choose to purchase rose water from a store, try to find some that is free of alcohol since alcohol dries out the skin (which is not what we want to do). If you’re feeling crafty, you can make your own rose water with items you probably already have around the house.
You will need:
1/2 cup or roughly a handful of rose petals (dried or fresh is fine. If using fresh, be sure to wash them to remove potential pesticides)
1 1/2 cups of distilled water
cheese cloth or sieve
small pan with lid
spray bottle or other container for storage (mason jars are cheap and easy to access)
How to Make Rose Water (the easy way)
Bring water to a boil then add in the rose petals. Cover pot and set to simmer until the rose petals lose their colour. Once the roses are white, turn off the heat and allow it to cool completely. Once cool, strain the petals from the water and pour the water into your spray bottle (or container of choice). Your rose water will last between 7 days and 1 month depending on your method of storage. Keeping it in the refrigerator will allow it to stay fresh longer.
Milk and Honey
Another one of February’s magickal associations is the use of milk. Ewes (female sheep) do not produce milk all year round, since breeding season is in the autumn, Ewes begin lactating in the later winter to early spring making February known as Ewe’s Milk Season.
That being said, sheep’s milk is often best used in various cheeses and some yogurt. However, cow’s milk is a wonderful, cheaper, and beneficial alternative to add to your beauty regime. Add a fresh glow to your skin with a simple milk and honey mask. Honey’s golden shine represents the returning of the sun in the spring and is also an antibacterial which will help to reduce acne.
Quick Milk and Honey Mask
Note: You can use either whole fat liquid milk or powdered milk. Liquid milk will yield a smoother product which will need to be applied differently than the powdered milk which can be applied like a proper mask.
Blend together a ratio of 1:1 of liquid milk and honey (example: 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup honey). Make sure your honey is soft enough to mix, alternately you can use a stand up or emulsion blender. Use a soft cloth to apply directly to clean skin, let sit on the skin for 20 minutes. Or, soak a soft cloth in the mixture and drape the saturated cloth over your face for 20 minutes. Rise with warm water and pat dry.
For powdered milk mix about 1/4 cup of powder with just enough water to create a thin paste. Mix that with 1 teaspoon of honey, make sure your honey is soft enough to mix. Once blended, apply to your clean face and allow to sit for 20 minutes. Rise off with warm water and pat dry.
Speaking of milk, ever treated yourself to a replenishing milk bath? Consider creating a sacred space within your bathroom and running yourself a milk bath. Ritual baths are a space in which to wash away any negative funk that you’ve built up over the day and re-balance yourself.
Light some candles, create a circle, and draw yourself a bath. Mix in your favorite milk bath mix or create your own. Using powdered milk, Himalayan pink salt or Epsom salt, dried flowers, and other ingredients of your choice, you can whip up a quick milk bath in no time.
Care For Your Garden
Are you a witch with a green thumb? Your indoor plants can use a little love at this time too. Saturate a soft washcloth in some liquid milk and gently clean the leaves of your house plants for a refreshing shine. This will help remove any built up dust and add a new luster and life to each leaf.
February is ultimately the time of the returning light. Imbloc and candlemas mark the beginning of this month of hearts. It marks the return of spring and the time of new beginnings. Take this time to banish some of the negative build up you’ve accumulated this winter.
Simple Ritual to Banish Negativity
Open a circle and invite in any deities if you so choose. Light a black and either a red or pink candle Grab 2 slips of paper On one slip write down the negative aspects of your life you wish to banaish On the other slip of paper write down what positive traits you would like to bring into your life. Using the black candle, light the slip of paper with the negativity on fire, place it in a fire safe container and allow it to burn completely. Visualize your troubles vanishing with the smoke. Next, using the pink/red candle, light the slip of paper with the positive affirmations on fire and place it in a fire safe container allowing it to burn completely. Visualize these good things coming into your life and what actions you can take to help set them in motion. Close your circle and give thanks.
Valentine’s Day is often a stressful day for everyone, take this time to be kind to yourself. Remember that no matter what you are loved. You don’t need a heart shapped box to prove it either. The best things in life are the simplest, and a little TLC can make all the difference. Get yourself a glass of your favorite drink, grab your favorite snack, and enjoy the day.
